Hosting & Domains

What is the difference between a domain & hosting?

What is a domain name?

A domain name is a unique website address that users type in to view your website. www.christom.com.au is a domain name. www.google.com is a domain name. www.news.com.au is a domain name. And so on.

Once you register a domain name, it doesn’t do much more than giving you complete ownership over the URL.

What is website hosting?

Once you purchase a domain name, website hosting is require for the website to appear on the world wide web.

Hosting allows you to create email addresses under the domain name (e.g. info@christom.com.au). Although registering a domain confirms that you can use it in an email address, it doesn’t allow you to create the email addresses until you have hosting.

Linking the domain name with the hosting

If you purchase these together then you wouldn’t need to worry about this.

If they were purchased separately then most likely you will be to go in the link them.

To link the two, you will need to log into your domain name account and update the name servers. The name servers point the domain name to the hosting. These details will have been provided by your hosting company.
