Custom iphone icon for your website

Yesterday when i was surfing the internet on my iPhone i found a website that was worth bookmarking. When the bookmark options appeared i noticed you can add the website to your home screen.

What was cool when the website saved that it had it’s own custom iphone icon. So i looked into creating one for my site.

How to bookmark on your iPhone

Firstly lets log into a website. In this case we’ll go to http://www.christom.com.au/

Once we are on http://www.christom.com.au/ we need to bookmark it.

To bookmark this or any other page tap on the “+” symbol along the bottom of the screen, which brings up:

“Add Bookmark” adds it to your bookmark menu, but the interesting feature here is Add to Home Screen. Tap it and you’ll now have a chance to fine-tune the name of the bookmark.

Notice the “Christom” icon to the left? This is just a .png image which i created in Photoshop. Lets now tap “add”.

As you can see, the icon has now been added to the home screen.

How to create an icon for your iPhone

Create an 45px x 45px image in Photoshop or your favourite design software and save it as a .png.

iPhone Icon

Add this code into your <head>, same as you would for your favicon.

<link rel=”apple-touch-icon” href=”/Graphics/iphone-icon.png” />
