3D gaming without the glasses. Nintendo announces new DS.

No more 3D glasses

3D technology has received a lot of media lately thanks to the movie Avatar. Electronic manufactures announcing a new range of 3D TV that will be released in the coming months.

Will this be just another flop? I mean who wants to wear glasses every time you watch TV. Nintendo is obviously convinced that 3D is the next big thing and as a result has announced a 3D-enabled gaming device title ‘3DS’, part of the popular DS series.

What makes Nintendo’s newest product stand out from the rest? The 3DS will be glasses free.

3D technology without the glasses has been around for a while now. In early 2008, a 3D company on the first floor of the office building I worked in bought a large 3D TV that worked without the silly glasses. Although I was amazed at what I saw, it still had a long way to come for 2 reasons; firstly, you had to move around the room until you found the right position where the 3D worked the best and secondly, watching the TV for more than 5 minutes caused a slight headache. I think the TV was too large for the current technology… so shrinking it down to a handheld device? I think it may just work!

Nintendo didn’t give many details beyond that announcement, saying that the Nintendo 3DS would be fully unveiled at the E3 trade show in June. While they’re announcing it now and giving out more details in June, Nintendo did say that the new 3D handheld won’t go on sale until next year.

It is an exciting time for technology with 3D TV’s, Microsoft’s Natal where gaming is control by your body movements, smart phones, Apple iPad which I believe will change the way we build websites, Windows 7 with touch screen capabilities and HTML5. I am looking forward to seeing what the future holds.
